Fabric computing is, in a word, unified. It weaves together computer, networking, storage access and virtualisation into one cohesive system. The term ‘fabric’ comes from its appearance; it is a visual intertwine of parts and cables.

Fabric computing consolidates infrastructure in the data centre by reducing what you physically have on premise and then connecting what you have with high-bandwidth connections. This saves both space and cost by increasing energy efficiency and allowing your servers to do what they do best: deliver computing power.
I know, this sounds a bit theoretical, so let me go through an example from Australia.
The Country Fire Authority (CFA) is a largely volunteer fire and emergency services organisation that serves 3.3 million people in more than one million homes and properties across the Australian state of Victoria.
In response to some of the devastating bushfires in Australia, the Australian government established a Royal Commission to improve the way that communities prepare for and respond to bushfires. The Commission recommended that the technology in CFA should be run less like a volunteer organisation and more like a professional one. In particular, the CFA needed to ensure high availability of critical applications and services for rapid emergency response; reduce operational risk, as well as power, cooling, cabling, and server provisioning time, and offer better technology services without additional budget.
As a first step towards these goals, CFA deployed Cisco networking equipment that helped it extend the reach and performance of its WAN communications across greater geographic areas and support rapid responses to emergencies. Once its WAN communications capabilities had been upgraded, CFA turned its attention to the data centre.
